Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey is seeking assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help with the aftermath of Hurricane Isaias.
Ivey requested a federal major disaster declaration that would give a federal agency such as FEMA broader authority to provide aid to an area impacted by a catastrophe.
The declaration has to be approved by President Donald Trump for the disaster relief to take place.
Ivey is seeking to have FEMA assist individuals, households and help cover eligible hurricane related costs for governments and certain non-profits.
Isaias made landfall as a Category 2 storm on Oct. 9 around Destin, Florida before moving into Alabama as it caused widespread damage, left thousands without power and resulted in at least two deaths in central Alabama.
Ivey declared a state of emergency for 40 counties prior to the storm’s arrival which opened the state to additional federal disaster relief such as the Internal Revenue Service providing affected taxpayers an extended deadline for tax relief.
